The basic blend can be stored in a plastic bag for 3 months or so. The use of scented oils gives a stronger perfume in the finished pomander. They can be used to soak the cloves (one oz. cloves w/ 1/2 Tblsp scented oil, cover, shake well, and leave for 24 hours before using), added to the spice mixture( one drop per Tblsp mixture), or painted on after curing (brush off orris root mixture, paint the fruit w/ the oil using a fine artists brush, making sure to paint each clove; let dry). You will need 1 oz cloves per fruit. If you are going to hang the pomanders with ribbon, leave a cross shape around the fruit free of cloves for the ribbon to fit snuggly. either mark it with your first line of cloves, or mark with tape. pierce holes for cloves with a knitting needle, leave space the width of a clove head between each. insert cloves, roll in orris root mixture, put in a paper bag together with any left over spice mixture. leave in cool dry place to dry, which can take from 1 to 3 months. When they are completely dry they will sound hollow when tapped, and will have become smaller and darkened. Before deocrating, brush off all remaining orrisroot mix. The scent should last for at least a year, and may be renewed by rubbing with 2 tbsp of the orris root mixture with 2 drops of essential oil added. Seal in a plastic bag for 2 weeks, to refresh.
