HERBAL READING LIST Compiled by Alexandria North There are certainly more herb books available then those listed here, but these were the most notworthy of the ones I have encountered. An asterisk ("*") indicates a strong recommendation. MAGICKAL: *"The Master Book of Herbalism" by Paul Beyerl (Pheonix Publishing, 1984). Covers both medicinal and magickal uses of herbs in two separate sections. A compassionate treatment, with lists of planetary and deity correspondences to herbs included. Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham (Llewellyn Publications, 1985) Extensive listing of herbs and their magickal uses. Primarily folklore culled from a variety of sources. Magic Herbalism - Secret Craft of the Wise by Scott Cunningham (Llewellyn Publications, 1982) Herbs in magickal usage. Breaks chapters down by desired effect (i.e. "love", "protection", etc). Fair glossary in back. *The Magic of Incense, Oils and Brews by Scott Cunningham (Llewellyn Publications, 1986) A wonderful book for learning how to use herbs for magick. Covers incense, oils, inks, baths, sachets, brews, and more! Many, many recipes, with encouragement to create your own. MEDICINAL: "A Modern Herbal", volumes I & II, by Mrs. M. Grieve (1931, reprinted by Dover, 1971) Classic sourcebook. Covers all aspects of herbs in an encyclopedia format. Ancient lore, cultivation, identification, medicinal uses and herb constituents are all listed. *"The Holistic Herbal" by David Hoffman (Findhorn Press, 1983). Highly recommended book on medicinal herbalism. Comprehensive. Covers the systems of the body and how to treat them herbally, followed by an herbal glossary which is compact but surprisingly complete. "The New Age Herbalist" by Richard Mabey (GAIA Books, London, 1988). Not quite as good as The Holistic Herbal in terms of the herbal glossary, but gives a good overview of herbs and their history, minus any magickal leanings. Shows photographs of most, if not all, herbs covered in the glossary. *"The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine" by Daniel B. Mowrey, Ph.D (Cormorant Books, 1986). Good book for finding the scientific basis for herbal actions. All "recipes" are for capsules, but if you prefer teas, the information about each herb is just as useful. Quotes scientific studies from all over the world. GENERAL AND COSMETIC: *"Jeanne Rose's Herbal Body Book" by Jeanne Rose (Perigree Books, 1976) An excellent book about cosmetic uses of herbs, with practical recipes. "Herbs & Things: Jeanne Roses Herbal" by Jeanne Rose (Perigree Books, 1972) All about making herbal compounds. Covers some medicinal and magickal uses. *"Mastering Herbalism" by Paul Huson (Stein and Day, 1974) Some magickal herbalism notes included. Covers culinary, cosmetic, and some medicinal uses. Good intro to how to use herbs in all areas of your life. By the author of "Mastering Witchcraft."
